EZproxy is a web proxy server which acts as an authentication system for users to verify that they are current IT Sligo students or staff members. (retired and current)
All of the journals and databases that the Library subscribes to require this verification for off-campus access because of license agreements between the library and its vendors and publishers.
Once signed in to the proxy server, EZproxy dynamically rewrites URLs of electronic resources , creating the same effect as if the off-campus user was accessing them while logged into a computer on campus.
Current IT Sligo registered students, staff members and retired staff members are able to use EZproxy and can log in using their Campus login . If you registered with Self Service Reset Password Management system when you first created your campus password, you will be able to use it again to reset your password. If not please get in touch with the IT Services Help Desk to get your login details reset. IT services run a helpdesk in room 3 of the Social Learning Zone from 10-12 and 2-4 Monday to Thursday and on a Fridays from 10am till 11am. Their phone number is +353 (0) 71 9155446. If you leave a voicemail with your contact details and student number they will get back to you.
Well, yes... but if you are logged into a computer or a thin client on campus in the library,a staff office or lab, you will not notice anything, in fact, it wil be really easy to use the databases and journals because you wont have to login. You are already logged in to the computer you are using, and ezproxy uses your computer login (campus login)
There is no need to install any software or plugins. You do need to make sure that your browser meets certain requirements however.
- If logged in to a pc on campus
- Just go to the library website, search summon, the online databases or the a-z of journals. You will not need to do anything extra because you have already logged into the the pc you are using.
- If using a PC from home or your workplace
- Just go to the library website, but use the off campus summon button in the middle of the homepage, this will prompt a login screen. The a-z of journals and the databases will also prompt a login screen. Enter your campus login details and you will gain access.
- Sometimes your workplace might have a firewall policy that prevents you getting access, you will have to double check with your workplace technical support if you can get access from home but not from work.
- If using a pc off campus at my workplace.
- This can create problems because you are trying to get out of your workplaces firewall and through ours (a firewall is to do with Internet security) . Try to talk to your technical support at work first to see if they can do anything, and if that does not work contact us. Please note however that the primary issue lies with your workplace, and we might not be able to help.
- If you are having difficulty connecting to EZproxy from your workplace it is probably due to firewall restrictions, and you will need to get your workplace technical support to help you.
- You may receive an error message when trying to access an electronic resource for which the Yeats Library does not provide access. For example, we do not subscribe to the e-books in Science Direct, and wnot all the databases have full text journal articles. Some of the journals in Emerald for example will give you full text, but some will just give you an abstract.
- If you are off campus, and do a summon search from the library homepage, upon finding an article for example and clicking on it the redirect button is randomly not working. It is better if you use the proper summon button for off campus access that is under the summon search.
Just e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org to get help. Your message goes into our helpdesk system and gets answered within a couple of days typically.
New First Time Students
Once you have registered online at IT Sligo for the new academic year, your student account will be setup within 24 hours. Once this is done, you must go to https://password.itsligo.ie and change your initial password, which is set to your date of birth in the format DDMMYYYY. This facility is available by choosing Option 3 – Change Password on the https://password.itsligo.ie main menu. Once this is complete, you can login to Moodle using your Student Number (e.g. S12345678) and the new password, access your college e-mail and access the library databases and e-resources.
The username for Moodle is your studentnumber. Password remains same for all services.
The username for college e-mail is email@example.com
The username for the library databases and e-recources is your student number
The username for current or retired staff for the library databases and e-recources is the computer login username.

The library password is a separate password that you create yourself on the library website. It allows you to login to your library account and renew your books, reserve books which are on loan, and use the self service machine on campus to check out, renew and and return your own books. If you have lost your campus password and you have previously registered with https://password.itsligo.ie just go to that link and reset your password. If you havent previously used https://password.itsligo.ie you much contact The IT Services Helpdesk. Once logged in an EZproxy session should remain valid, but will time out after 2 hours of inactivity.
However, in order to stay in an EZproxy session, you must also:
Conduct all your research within the same browser you used to logged into EZproxy. The session will, however, bridge across multiple tabs of the same browser.
Navigate the web in a pathway, or chain, by following links or using your browser’s forward and back arrows as much as possible, instead of hyperlinking between sites. For example, if you use Google Scholar's library links feature to access a Yeats Library link page to click through to a database, you will be connected and ‘in’ an EZproxy session. You can search the database for materials and all of your results will be available to you, but if you then decide to click on a site you have bookmarked or type in a URL for a new site directly into your browser address bar, you will jump ‘out’ of the session. When in doubt, check your URL address for the word ‘ezproxy.’ If it’s there, then you’re connected.
